Māori Two-Phased Neural Fuzzy System & Huntington’s Disease
Melanie Cheung, Kevin Shedlock, Mike Sutter, Bobi-Rose Leatherby
Project Description
This project proposes a hybrid (neuro-fuzzy) two-phased model that combines an artificial neural network to predict the functional capacity of a participant to determine a stage of reaction. This approach provides a method for addressing complex terms to predict deterioration in motor response function among individuals diagnosed with neurological movement disorders. Research involves analyzing the researchers’ own dataset from FightHD, a Kaupapa Māori neuroplasticity-based brain training treatment for Huntington’s disease (HD) developed alongside neuroplasticity pioneer Mike Merzenich and 14 Māori HD whanau (families). The project team will use a Neuro Fuzzy Systems (NFS) to evaluate functional and structural brain imaging, cognitive, psychological data using novel equipment interfaces from the FightHD cohort. This global analytical approach helps to create a better picture of overall brain functioning, both in healthy Māori and Māori with HD.
