The Research:

The AIAI Lab is a dedicated technical initiative within Abundant Intelligences designed to foster Indigenous-led innovation in artificial intelligence design by building the technical capacity and a collaborative environment necessary to support visionary research, prototyping, and community engagement.

Abundant Intelligences is entering its fourth year and moving through the Imaginaries Phase focused on creative, technically advanced AI experimentation. As research progresses, the AIAI Lab serves as a key connector and responsive support hub across the network. It offers accessible technical advice and hands-on support for AI prototyping, builds bridges between technical and non-technical collaborators, and organizes training, events, and student engagement opportunities, including curriculum development for the Summer Institute for Indigenous AI. Throughout, the Lab upholds Indigenous data sovereignty principles, including OCAP and CARE, and cultivates partnerships that align with Indigenous-led research values.

Co-directed by Prof. Karim Jerbi (Université de Montréal) and Prof. Jason Lewis (Concordia University), the Lab consists of a dynamic Student Tech Team who support the Lab’s activities. The Student Tech Team supports AI prototyping, organizes technical workshops, and helps develop learning resources and curricula. Team members also build a knowledge base, assist with hackathons and seminars, and contribute to student-led projects and internships focused on Indigenous AI. They are supported by an Advisory Board of AI researchers and technologists. Through network-wide collaborations and consultation, the Advisory Board provides technical, strategic and ethical guidance to ensure the AIAI Lab aligns with Indigenous values, data sovereignty principles, and the broader goals of the Abundant Intelligences Partnership. Advisory Board members help support partnerships, and ensure the Lab stays connected to state-of-the-art AI developments. The Lab also collaborates closely with Montreal-based institutions including Concordia University, Université de Montréal, Mila, IVADO, and UNIQUE.
