Abundant Intelligences is establishing a detailed data sharing and intellectual property framework. This position will support this work through research on Indigenous data sovereignty, community protocols, and cultural & legal regimes for protecting cultural property within the context of AI research; developing protocols, methods, and tools for protecting and sharing Indigenous data to help in developing advanced technologies such as AI; and disseminating the knowledge acquired within the Partnership and in external publication and presentation venues. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work closely with program directors and working groups to ensure their research helps advance the partnership research priorities.
Abundant Intelligences Postdoctoral Fellows are intended to support the career development of outstanding PhD recipients with great potential for contributing to the research program. We seek applicants whose professional preparedness, experience, and accomplishments are informed by experiences working with and within Indigenous groups. Where pools of qualified applicants are strong, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate, through prior actions and achievements, intentional and actioned commitment to Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies, and research or creative activity focused on empowering Indigenous populations.
The Postdoctoral Fellow selected will join a cohort of emerging scholars as part of the research program, will engage in scholarly research and creation, and may be asked to perform duties common to academic personnel, including grant proposal writing and teaching, as well as participate in partnership governance.

Hours per week: Full-time
Position title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Immediate supervisors: Prof. Jason Edward Lewis, or other Abundant Intelligences co-investigator. To be determined in discussion with candidate
Work schedule: Monday – Friday, or as agreed upon between candidate and supervisor(s)
Duration of the contract: 2 years.
Location: Strong preference for Montreal (hybrid), though other locations will be considered
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have completed all requirements for their doctorate degree within the past 5 years from the start date of postdoctoral position, or demonstrate that it will be awarded no later than the start date of the Postdoctoral position;
Proof of PhD completion or expected completion must be provided;
The Postdoctoral Fellow position is open to both domestic and international doctoral student graduates and recent graduates.
Once appointed, the Postdoctoral Fellow cannot concurrently hold a tenure-track or continuing faculty position at a college or university.
Evidence of strong communications skills, and the ability to disseminate scholarly findings in peer-reviewed publications.

Applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellow should have expertise in one or a combination of the following:
Indigenous Knowledges Systems
Indigenous Data Sovereignty
Indigenous Data Governance
The interrelations between Indigenous / tribal / First Nations sovereignty and data sovereignty and the creation of synthesized and unifying approaches to data, information, records and archives.
Existing models of Research Data Management within high-technology research and development efforts that respect OCAP and CARE principles
Methodologies of working with Indigenous partners and communities, research and co-design data, information and recordkeeping governance structures, rights charters, policy frameworks, protocols and models for transformative participatory practice in government and non-Indigenous organizations sometimes called ethical engagement or co-production of Knowledge.
Indigenous studies and history.
Library / Information Science
Human rights / International or tribal law fields
Experiences, and/or expertise in research, teaching, mentoring, and/or service, that incorporate Indigenous Knowledge Systems
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in research
Demonstrated potential for leadership in scholarly activities, professional activities, communication, and outreach
RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and co-design data, information and recordkeeping governance structures
Co-design and monitoring of the Abundant Intelligences Data Sharing and Intellectual Property framework, as well as updated data sovereignty aspects of related partnership agreements such as the Research Collaboration Agreement.
Edit and publish a collected volume on Indigenous Data Sovereignty with contributors from Abundant Intelligences as well as external contributors.
Co-develop, with other Fellows and directors, a graduate-level course on Indigenous Approaches to AI.
Provide advice to the Abundant Intelligences partners on strategies, tools and best-practices for data and IP governance as it pertains to the partnerships’ research projects
Participate in academic and collaborative research projects in the group and with external partners
Contribute to workshop design and execution for academic and non-academic learners
Lead and contribute to publications
Present research results at international conferences
Continuous engagement with Abundant Intelligences communities, members, working groups, leadership, and committees
Contribute to education activities in bachelor and masters programs supported by the group as well as to activities with community-based learners and partners
